Ducati Recalls 2010-2011 MTS1200 and 2011 Diavel Motorcycles for Steering Defect

Ducati is recalling certain model year 2010-2011 Multistrada 1200, and model year 2011, Diavel motorcycles.

The electronic steering lock may fail to disengage during the motorcycle "key-on" process. This has been linked directly to a certain revision of the hands free device software. It could result in a situation where the motorcycle's engine might start while the steering lock is still engaged. A rider could start the motorcycle and attempt to ride away while the steering is still locked.

The number of units affected is 1051.

Check out my Motorcycle Recalls feature for more details.

U.S. Motorcycle Sales Rise During the First Quarter

Press Release:
Motorcycle sales among major brands rose 7.2 percent in the first quarter of 2011, compared to the same period last year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council’s Retail Sales Report. This report tracks sales among 18 leading brands being sold in the U.S.

The popular scooter segment saw the biggest gain, up nearly 50 percent. Sales of dual-purpose bikes, built for on- and off-highway use and generally among the most fuel-efficient motorcycles, increased by almost 25 percent. Tire sales, a strong indicator of motorcycle use, were up as well during the first three months.
“Nothing compares to a motorcycle for combining fun with saving money,” said Tim Buche, MIC president and chief executive officer. “There’s no more enjoyable way to get to work and get around, and rising fuel prices have given our customers yet another great reason to ride.”
Motorcycle and scooter tire sales increased 29.4 percent in the first quarter, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council’s Quarterly U.S. Motorcycle Tire Sales Report, which tracks nine major tire brands. Total on-highway tire sales rose 27.5 percent, while scooter tires jumped 48.6 percent.
“Tires sales add to new-bike sales figures as a measure of motorcycle interest since there are still a lot of great used bikes putting on the miles, and older bikes that owners are reviving and enjoying once again,” Buche said. “We see Americans leaving their cars at home more, enjoying the convenience and exhilaration of motorcycling, and getting into a different way of being green.”
The MIC Owner Survey estimates that 11 million motorcycles were in use in 2009, a 5 percent increase over the 2008 motorcycle population of 10.4 million. Motorcycle miles traveled also increased 5 percent from 2008 to 2009 with a total of 27.6 billion miles. The percentage of U.S. households with at least one bike rose from 5.4 percent in 2003 to 6.8 percent in 2009.

Indian Motorcycle Production Moves To Iowa

The Omaha World Herald is reporting that Indian Motorcycles production is moving to Spirit Lake, Iowa with the news of Polaris' purchase of the company last week.

Indian Motorcycle Production Moves To Iowa
The country's oldest motorcycle brand has a new owner — and a new production site in northwest Iowa.
Indian Motorcycle was purchased last week by Polaris Industries, a Medina, Minn.-based company that makes snowmobiles, ATVs and Victory motorcycles, among other vehicles.
Over the next two to three months, Polaris plans to shut down operations at Indian's North Carolina headquarters, pack up the production equipment and send it to Spirit Lake, Iowa. Marlys Knutson, a Polaris spokeswoman, said it's not clear yet how soon Indian motorcyles will start rolling off the lines in Iowa or if more workers will be hired.

Custom Chrome Launches Jammer and Touring Catalogs

Custom Chrome today announces that the V-twin aftermarket parts distributor will release stand alone versions of the famous Jammer Handbook and an all new Touring catalog. Both publications will be filled with parts and accessories aimed at the specific category noted and represent a nod to the past and a look to the future in motorcycle trends and buying habits.

With the Jammer Handbook, Custom Chrome is reaching back into the storied past of both companies with again releasing a Jammer catalog separate from the Custom Chrome main catalog. The Jammer Handbook was one of the industry’s original catalogs, being initially created during the customizing craze of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Today’s old school bike builder, dealer and owner will find the current version of the Handbook full of the classic aftermarket parts Jammer is known for as well as new parts with the same vibe, feel and look.
Also new for 2011 is the Custom Chrome Touring catalog. With the emergence of v-twin riders personalizing and customizing Harley Touring motorcycles, this new edition is packed full of parts and accessories that will make those long road miles seem shorter and more comfortable all the while allowing you to ride in style. Touring bike owners and dealers will find the new catalog a fantastic quick reference for Touring editions of “The World’s Finest Products for Harley-Davidsons”.
“We decided that Jammer should again have it’s own place in the market,” says CCI President and CEO Holger Mohr. “Our old school dealers kept asking for it and requesting their own copy of the Jammer Handbook, in short, we listened. We also paid attention to our customers who constantly require touring parts and accessories and frequently order parts for those bikes. We wanted to provide a smaller version of the main catalog but one that is focused on the parts being constantly ordering.”
Each catalog will be available for consumers to purchase at $5.99ea plus shipping and handling. To order please visit www.jammercycleproducts.com or www.customchrome.com.

SuperTrapp Celebrates 40 Years

Press Release:
SuperTrapp Industries (www.SuperTrapp.com) is celebrating 40 years of being a leading manufacturer of comprehensive performance exhaust systems for a variety of motor vehicle applications, including motorcycles, ATV and automotive.
The history of the SuperTrapp muffler dates back to 1971 in the Davis, California garage of inventor, Paul Moller.  In the late 60’s, Moller was immersed in experimental trial of the XM-3, his early attempt at a flying automobile.  In desperate need of funds, Moller began looking for an intermediate, far easier target for his newly developed tunable disc technology.  Eventually Moller turned to a passion of his – motorcycles.  And, the SuperTrapp muffler was born, soon becoming one of the most popular aftermarket accessories ever made for motorcycles.

A signature feature of SuperTrapp exhaust systems is the patented Tunable Disc Technology which was originally created for the XDUSOR, the first motorcycle exhaust product sold by Moller in 1971.  This technology allows the rider to adapt their bike, ATV or automotive to a specific riding environment.  This is accomplished through a series of discs with a precisely aligned diameter that form the exhaust outlet.  By adding or subtracting discs, the rider can tune the power band and sound of their machine in just a few minutes with basic hand tools.
SuperTrapp began to design and manufacture an Automotive line of exhausts in the 1980’s.  Their WaveTech line is still a popular choice for sport compact imports.  With several Automotive exhaust choices, SuperTrapp exhausts can be mounted to everything from Porsches, Vettes, hot rods and everyday work commuters to sand rails, sprint cars, trucks, Jeeps and everything in between.  Their exhausts are used by the Skip Barber Racing School, so that in itself, says something.
In 1991, SuperTrapp purchased Kerker who was once a fierce competitor.  SuperTrapp worked to reinvigorate the brand, introducing dozens of new products since the purchase.  Kerker exhausts have long been popular with both the racing circuit and the street rider.  They deliver superior top-end power in one of the most lightweight designs available.  The Kerker brand has been implemented into the V-Twin and Metric applications as well.
The SuperTrapp brand continued to grow.  In the 1990’s, they launched their ATV line of exhausts, sponsored the Yamaha race team and for several years, sponsored the Highlifter Mud Nationals Mud Bog.  Teaming up with legendary engine-builder, Tom Carlson, was a no-brainer.  The result was the birth of TC Race Systems which remain a popular choice among sport quad riders.
In 2004, SuperTrapp teamed up with legendary racing mechanic for H-D, Bill Werner.  He is the winningest tuner in AMA Grand National Racing history.  Together, SuperTrapp and Bill Werner developed the XR750 2:2 Megaphone Race System and a 2:2 Stepped Head Pipe Race System.
SuperTrapp’s Tunable Disc Technology quickly became and remains the top-choice for flat-track racers.  The tunable exhausts have proven performance on the flat-track and they’ve carried that through to all of their tunable exhausts for street, track and trail applications.
Racing is in SuperTrapp’s blood.  Since 2001, SuperTrapp continues to sponsor Ton Pels, one of the most experienced European Drag Racers, and his Zodiac Drag Race team.  Pels’ 40 years in motorcycle drag racing has earned himself the nickname, “The Godfather” among industry peers.  Ton’s Top Fuel Harley-Davidson is, and has been for many years, the fastest and quickest normally aspirated motorcycle outside the United States.  In 2007, Roel Koedam started riding for Zodiac’s FIM / UEM European Championship, SuperTwin class.
SuperTrapp is also a proud sponsor of Xtreme International Ice Racing, or XiiR for the past decade.  The XiiR features bike and ATV riders racing at up to 60mph on ice without brakes.  Hockey arenas throughout the nation host this adrenaline-pumping event.  “SuperTrapp mufflers are a perfect fit for ice racing because with so much speed and different speeds it hits when we need it to hit”, according to Anthony Barlow, champion ice racer and organizer of the XiiR.
SuperTrapp partnered up with master-bike builder, Paul Yaffe in 2001.  Since 1984 Yaffe has been designing some of the world’s most exquisite, custom Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
Yaffe’s vision and unique style have been setting industry standards for many years.  He once built a Phantom Flame Throwing bike for Discovery Channel’s Biker Build-Off.
The Road Legends line of exhausts was born when the radical designs of Paul Yaffe and the unprecedented quality and engineering of SuperTrapp teamed up.  Their Road Legends Crack Pipes, Phantom Pipes and X Pipes are unlike any other pipes out there.  They truly are works of art.
Baggers have really made their mark in the past few years.  SuperTrapp teamed up with Yaffe to design our FLH Phantom Pipe and eye candy end caps for our numerous Bagger Slip-Ons.  You have to see the Yaffe Big Poppa, Claw, Afterburners and Holy Moly for yourself to truly appreciate their originality.
SuperTrapp’s state-of-the-art R&D coupled with the expertise of their engineers has allowed them to be the leading, manufacturer of tunable, aftermarket exhausts.
They want their customers to have the best which is why they’ve invested in state-of-the-art testing and production facilities to ensure performance and quality of their products.
And, the quality and service doesn’t stop when your product leaves their facility.  They have industry veterans and motorcycle enthusiasts managing their Customer Service Department, answering live calls, e-mails and managing the SuperTrapp Support Forum.
SuperTrapp is poised to continue their legacy and deliver the best performance exhausts in V-Twin, Metric, Dirt, Sport, ATV and Automotive exhaust applications.
Request your 2011, commemorative, 40th Anniversary catalog by e-mailing marketing@SuperTrapp.com.  Become a fan of SuperTrapp on Facebook and follow them on Twitter.  For more information on all SuperTrapp exhausts, visit SuperTrapp.com, or call 216-265-8400.

S&S Cycle to Stand Behind Big Dog Motorcycle Engine Warranties

From S&S Cycle:
On April 8, 2011 Big Dog Motorcycles of Witchia, KS closed its doors.
If you own a Big Dog motorcycle, you may be feeling a little uneasy about keeping it on the road. S&S is trying to make that easier by offering a number of services related to the engines. First of all S&S will honor the warranty on any S&S engine that was supplied in a Big Dog for as long as the original vehicle warranty would have lasted. Secondly, S&S can supply replacement parts for your stock emissions compliant engine. That means your engine can be repaired at any S&S dealer or by the S&S Remanufacturing Service, and you can be assured that it still is "street legal" and that you are not violating emissions laws. Finally, S&S can offer performance upgrades for your BDM V117 engine, which can be installed by an S&S dealer or our Remanufacturing service.

Big Dog owners are wondering where to turn for warranty support on their bikes. Though the official BDM warranty ended with the company, S&S is stepping up to the plate and offering a special engine warranty to all owners of Big Dog motorcycles that were still covered by the factory warranty. S&S company president George Smith commented "I'm certainly sad to see a good customer like BDM close their doors, but I feel that we need to shoulder the responsibility, and make sure the end customer gets a square deal. I suppose we could just look the other way, but I won't do that. After all, these are S&S engines. We built them and we're going to stand behind them!"

Big Dog Warranty from S&S Cycle, Inc.
The special engine warranty will remain in force for the original owner of the bike, for as long as the original vehicle warranty would have lasted. To be eligible owners will simply need to confirm that their vehicle was still under warranty by presenting an original bill of sale to any S&S dealer.
S&S Cycle of Viola, Wisconsin would also like to assure owners of BDM bikes that S&S will be able to supply engine parts to keep your Big Dog in the hunt for years to come. Owners of older BDM bikes no longer under warranty may have the engines repaired by an S&S dealer, or your dealer can send them to S&S to be professionally rebuilt by the S&S Remanufacturing Service in LaCrosse, WI. S&S will charge the same reasonable rate charged to any S&S engine owner, and we'll even do performance upgrades at the same time. S&S remanufactured engines are also covered by a 1 year warranty. Visit the S&S website at sscycle.com for more details or to find an S&S dealer in your area.

Polaris Industries To Keep Some Engine Manufacturing Operations in Osceola

The Company will preserve jobs at facility to meet demands of continued, strong growth

MEDINA, Minn. (April 19, 2011) — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced it will keep some of its engine manufacturing operations in Osceola, WI. This announcement comes in response to stronger than projected growth for Polaris in recent months.

“Since we announced the strategic realignment last year, our volumes are up significantly in each of our businesses and our U.S. plants are full from a physical footprint standpoint,” said Scott Wine, CEO, Polaris Industries Inc.  “While we have outperformed our original volume projections, the Osceola team has executed flawlessly and continues to produce world-class, quality products.  In order to meet escalating demand while maintaining our focus on quality, keeping some engine capability and output in Osceola was an obvious choice.”
Keeping these manufacturing operations in Osceola allows Polaris dual-plant production capability for Off-Road Vehicle engines and provides production continuity for motorcycle and snowmobile engines.  The Company will utilize the capabilities and current infrastructure in Osceola to maintain continuity for the foreseeable future.
Polaris worked closely with the state of Wisconsin and the Department of Commerce to keep some engine manufacturing in Osceola and preserve approximately 50 assembly jobs at the facility.  Polaris’ current global employment base is approximately 3,300 people.
