Three Types of People to Fire Immediately
From Bloomberg Businessweek:
Want a more innovative company? Get rid of these folks. Today.
By G. Michael Maddock and Raphael Louis Vitón
“I wanted a happy culture. So I fired all the unhappy people.” —A very successful CEO (who asked not to be named)
We (your authors) teach our children to work hard and never, ever give up. We teach them to be grateful, to be full of wonder, to expect good things to happen, and to search for literal and figurative treasure on every beach, in every room, and in every person.
But some day, when the treasure hunt is over, we’ll also teach them to fire people. Why? After working with the most inventive people in the world for two decades, we’ve discovered the value of a certain item in the leadership toolbox: the pink slip.
Show of hands: How many of you out there in Innovationland have gotten the “what took you so long?” question from your staff when you finally said goodbye to a teammate who was seemingly always part of problems instead of solutions?
We imagine a whole bunch of hands. (Yep, ours went up, too.)
These people—and we going to talk about three specific types in a minute—passive-aggressively block innovation from happening and will suck the energy out of any organization.
When confronted with any of the following three people—and you have found it impossible to change their ways, say goodbye.

North Carolina—Motorcycle Battle Royale
Maggie Valley (NC) parleys with Rally in the Valley, Thunder in the Smokies to negotiate truce
The coordinators of the annual Rally in the Valley motorcycle event have strapped Maggie Valley leaders a seemingly impossible ultimatum that could leave the town in straits no matter what they decide.
Rally in the Valley coordinators asked the town to bar any other motorcycle festivals from coming to town the week before or after its September rally in hopes of ensuring a bigger draw for its own event. If the town didn’t comply, Rally in the Valley would be no more.
The town dutifully responded by asking Maggie’s other big motorcycle event of the fall, Thunder in the Smokies, traditionally held the weekend before Rally in the Valley, to move dates.

Pingel Enterprise, Inc. Announces Kickstands For Lowered FLH’s
With the newer Harley-Davidson’s and their taller seat heights, have you considered lowering your front end to get better handling with your bike? If you have, you need a kickstand that will work and keep your bike upright safely because the stock kickstand will lean the bike to the right too much and it will want to fall over.
Pingel Enterprise, Inc. has designed 2 kickstand models for lowered bikes with a model for 1-inch lowered and one for 2-inch lowered bikes. These kickstands are handcrafted in the USA, made of steel, tig welded and beautifully hand polished and then chrome plated. They are deigned to mount to the stock mount and will accept the stock spring. Models have a full surface foot contact area and have easy accessibility with stock and oversized primary covers.
Pingel also has a stock replacement model which has a lesser lean angle to make it easier to get the heavy bike off its kickstand. To go with this, Pingel also sells rear lowering kits.

Eastwood Launches Aerosol Injected System
Press Release
The Eastwood Company today launched its patent-pending and award winning* Aerosol Injected System. These two innovative products meet the needs and demands of home shop DIY’ers, industry and professionals.
The two Eastwood Aerosol Injected products include a specially formulated lubricant and cleaner, each designed to work in conjunction with the engineered tapered nozzles. The specialized two-piece injection nozzles allow the formulas to penetrate deep into tubing, recesses and fluid paths without spraying back at the user. Both products feature a 360° aerosol can that allows application at any angle. Ideal for paint guns, brake tubing, fuel systems and pneumatic tools, among many other applications.
Eastwood’s Aerosol Injected System’s two-piece design gives users the option to customize each application and allows insertion with and without the 3” extension.
“The nozzle’s patent-pending taper, when inserted into the target opening, creates a tight seal, ensuring a focused and concentrated blast of pressurized spray without any ‘blow back’ at the user,” said John “JR” Robinson, designer of the Aerosol Injected System and Eastwood Product Manager. “The blast is initiated when the user pushes gently on the back of the aerosol can.”
When the job is complete, the 3” Injector Nozzle Extension has a unique locking tab that attaches to the side of the can for storage.
The new Aerosol Injected Cleaner formula can be used for general purposes at home, industry and in the garage. It cleans paint guns, brake lines, transmission lines, fuel lines, engine cylinders, air intake systems, carburetors and brake calipers exceptionally well. The Aerosol Injected Lubricator Formula is great for automotive, industrial, marine, power sports and lawn and garden applications, as well as engine fogging and general purpose lubrication. Both the Eastwood Injected Cleaner and Lubricator formulations are 50 state compliant and meet federal VOC and MIR regulations.
*Eastwood’s Aerosol Injection System won the 2011 Popular Mechanic’s Magazine Editors Choice Award for New Product Innovation at the 2011 SEMA Show (Specialty Equipment Marketing Association).

'Bike Week' Legal Battle Ends
DAYTONA BEACH -- The Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce has won its nearly yearlong legal battle to protect its right and that of local businesses to freely use the phrase "Daytona Beach Bike Week" on T-shirts and other goods.
U.S. District Court Judge Mary Scriven on Tuesday ruled invalid a claim by Holly Hill-based Joe Cool Inc. and its two New York affiliates to have exclusive ownership rights to the name of Daytona Beach's annual spring motorcycle rally, which began in 1939.
That claim was based on Joe Cool owner Yosef Amar's purchase in 2009 for $87.50 of a state trademark to the phrase Daytona Beach Bike Week.

PPG Introduces ENVIROBASE High Performance EC800 Ultra Fast Clearcoat
PPG Industries' (NYSE:PPG) automotive refinish busness has launched EC800 Ultra Fast Clearcoat, a high-production, 2.1-VOC (volatile organic compound) air-dry clear for use with the ENVIROBASE(R) High Performance system. The new clearcoat is intended to support high-volume collision repair centers focused on cutting refinish cycle times while still delivering premium quality finishes.
According to Jeff Griffin, PPG compliant segment manager, North America, EC800 offers an array of benefits that production-oriented repair facilities will find attractive. It affords exceptional cycle time performance while meeting all VOC regulations, he said, adding that the new clearcoat provides excellent gloss and appearance.
EC800 is suitable for single- and multipanel repairs and requires no flash time between coats, plus it dries dust-free in as little as 10 minutes. In addition, EC800 does not require bake time in the paint booth, thereby allowing shop owners to save on energy consumption and costs.
“We formulated EC800 to address the issues of speed and ease of application without sacrificing finish quality, appearance or durability,” Griffin said. “The intent is to help shop owners maximize throughput and productivity and reduce energy costs. With so many collision centers now using Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat, EC800 is an effective and efficient addition to their refinish process.”

New Hampshire—Judge Rules Towns Can't Make Own Motorcycle Noise Rules
By Elizabeth Dinan
December 20, 2011 11:42 AM
BRENTWOOD — New Hampshire cities and towns cannot impose limits on motorcycle noise that are stricter than what state law allows, a Rockingham County judge has ruled.
“If each town in New Hampshire had the authority to enact different noise emission ordinances, the state would be subject to a checkerboard pattern of laws,” ruled Superior Court Judge Kenneth McHugh. “For example, a motorcyclist who complies with the state noise emission limit could be precluded from driving through a town because that town enacted a lower noise emission limit than the state.”
The judge's decision comes in response to a lawsuit filed by Seacoast Motorcycles Inc., owner of the Seacoast Harley Davidson dealership at 17 Lafayette Road in North Hampton. Seacoast filed suit against the Town of North Hampton, successfully arguing that the town did not have legal authority to adopt its own motorcycle noise ordinance.

Motorcycles Used in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Movie
The new movie, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, required three identical motorcycles for the character, Lisbeth Salander, to ride. Here's an article in bikeexif.com that explains how these bikes were prepared for the movie and how the star was trained to ride them. Here's an excerpt:
"About a year ago, I finished reading the final instalment of Stieg Larsson’s 'Millennium trilogy.' I found these Swedish crime novels absolutely gripping—and not just because the heroine Lisbeth Salander rides a motorcycle. In two weeks, the US movie adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo will be released—so here’s a timely look at how the motorcycles used in the film were prepared. The job was given to Justin Kell of Glory Motor Works in LA, and it’s an insight into a rarely-seen aspect of the film-making process."Read the article.

Helmet Law Modification Sought In Massachusetts
If State Senator Steven Brewer, Representative Anne Gobi and the Modified Motorcycle Association have their way, motorcyclists 21 and over will be free to choose whether or not to wear a motorcycle helmet.
Another proposed bill by Senator Robert Hedlund would allow motorcyclists from other states without helmet laws to choose their headgear.
Paul Cote, Justice Rider and BOLT of Massachusetts, said there is an economic incentive to pass the legislation because motorcyclists travel to nearby states that do not require helmets and spend money while there. New Hampshire has no motorcycle-helmet law, while Maine and Connecticut require protective headgear for all riders under age 18. Rhode Island law requires riders under age 21 to wear helmets. “What you’re missing in Massachusetts is with 185,000 registered bikes, a large portion of them are going out of state every weekend to go ride without a helmet... “There’s no wall around Massachusetts.” Source: The Lowell Sun, Easyriders magazine.

St. Paul Harley Dealer Wins Ruling On New Sales Rules
Source: The Business Journal by Jim Hammerand, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal
A federal judge has put the brakes on new Harley-Davidson sales restrictions that a St. Paul dealership said would put it out of business.
U.S. District Judge Patrick Schiltz on Monday ordered Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Motor Co. not to enforce its ban on sales of parts, accessories and apparel through third-party websites or to international customers. The judge's order is effective through Feb. 29.
St. Paul Harley-Davidson (incorporated as St. Paul Motorsports Inc.) sued the motorcycle manufacturer in October to fight the policies, which would eliminate about a quarter of the 72-year-old dealership's revenue.

Updates And Lower Price For Street Performance Tuner
Factory Engine Calibration Uploads Available Directly to Owners
Harley-Davidson owners can now use the Screamin’ Eagle Street Performance Tuner (P/N 41000008B, $249.95) to upload and install the latest factory ECM (electronic control module) calibrations to match specific hardware upgrades, including high-flow air cleaners, Street Performance mufflers, and Big Bore engine kits. Previously, an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer was required to complete these software uploads. The revised Street Performance Tuner also gives the owner the ability to view and clear ECM trouble codes, and to collect real-time vehicle data, which can then be displayed on a computer screen. Finally, Harley-Davidson has lowered the suggested retail price of the Street Performance Tuner to $249.95.
With the Street Performance Tuner, the Harley-Davidson owner can install factory-calibrated ECM software that will deliver the best all-around performance for a specific model and its state of tune after EPA-compliant performance modifications are made to EFI-equipped Harley-Davidson models. The kit also includes the Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) module that records up to 15 minutes of run-time data on up to 27 variables that can be downloaded to a PC. Using the included software, the motorcycle owner or a technician can evaluate engine operating parameters such as the air/fuel ratio, O2 sensor readings, engine speed and temperature, RPM and vehicle speed, throttle position, spark advance, and many more performance characteristics of the motorcycle. The VCI will also record and display service codes for troubleshooting and diagnostics.
The Screamin’ Eagle Street Performance Tuner may be installed on 2007-later Sportster and XR, Dyna, Softail and Touring models (except Trike).

Toy Run Is Hobbled After Court Ruling In Dispute Between Mayor, Police Chief
After 27 consecutive years without a hitch, somebody threw a monkey wrench into an annual event that provides thousands of toys to disadvantaged children each holiday season — just six days after the event's organizer won the latest court victory in a long and bitter dispute with the local police establishment.
On Nov. 14, a ruling by Lehigh County Judge Michele Varricchio reaffirmed previous rulings that Macungie Mayor Rick Hoffman is in charge of the borough police department, as the law clearly provides, and Police Chief Edward Harry Jr. cannot deny Hoffman access to the department.
Last Sunday, the motorcycle organization ABATE held its 28th annual Lehigh Valley Toy Run, with a procession of 1,500 motorcycles and other vehicles carrying toys from the Walmart store in Lower Macungie Township to the Volunteers of America Children's Center in Allentown.
On all 27 previous toy runs, police and other authorities provided escorts and helped the long processions stay together by moving through intersections without interference from traffic lights or other obstructions.

S&S Executive Says State Aid Saved Company
George B. Smith credits economic development assistance from the state for keeping his company in business.
That's why the CEO of S&S Cycle was happy Monday to host Gov. Scott Walker for a bill signing at the company's La Crosse operation. Walker signed two bills that streamline qualifications for business loans through the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority.
Smith said his company, which manufactures aftermarket parts for Harley-Davidson motorcycles and makes motorcycle engines, had rapid growth in the 1990s and early in the 2000s. It expanded from Viola to La Crosse in 2004.

Harley-Davidson's CEO Is Trying To Save His Company By Copying Ford
From www.businessinsider.com
Harley-Davidson has been in trouble over the past five years. Bike sales have plummeted 31% since 2006, its core customer base is aging rapidly and the market downturn has quashed people's demand for $20,000 motorcycles.
But lately, there have been glimmers of hope. Harley is about the have its first annual sales gain in nearly half-a-decade, and its stock has more than doubled since CEO Keith Wandell took the helm two years ago.
